“S’up?” Rob asked as he sauntered toward Eric.

“Six-car parking lot,” Eric said, not wanting to elaborate at this point. The inspector had signed off and now the city planner had, too, as long as they added a ramp to the back of the house. It made sense to Eric. A good portion of their guests would be older folks who might not need a ramp but who would appreciate it when moving their luggage. One more thing to add to the growing list of shit-I-should-have-thought-of-sooner-and-budgeted-for. It was a long list. Longer than any list he’d ever sent to Santa. “And we need to get a legal ramp on the back of the house.”

“Leading into the porch?” Rob asked, and Eric nodded. “And by we you mean me, right?” he confirmed. Over the last few months, Eric had learned Rob was more than a pack of muscles. He was also a quick thinker, a good teacher, and he tolerated Eric’s foul moods, which were plentiful whenever Eric helped with the clunker. Despite Eric’s involvement, she was going to be a beauty by the time Rob finished with her. Eric knew it would fetch a handsome price for the local veteran’s group.

“Yep, you. For the most part,” Eric added on the off chance he had the time to help.

“I’ll get on it as soon as I’m done tiling the upstairs bathrooms.” You what, now? Eric thought as his brain screeched to a stop. He didn’t know Rob was on Andi’s crew. I thought he was cleaning out the carriage house. “I need to finish the third floor and then do some touch-up now that everything has been installed in all the second-floor bathrooms. Maybe middle of next week? Assuming Andi doesn’t need me to start on the kitchen backsplash. I’m kind of her go-to guy for grout.” Rob sounded pleased with the distinction, and Eric played along.

“Do you want a pathway from the parking lot to the ramp? Maybe flagstone? Installing that’s gotta be like outdoor tiling,” Rob said.

“But it’s not.” Is it? Eric wondered as he envisioned the path.

“Okay,” Rob agreed easily, not seeming to be bothered by Eric’s short answer. “I’ll check with Andi. She’ll have an idea or two.”

“Don’t bother Andi on this. I know what to do.” Or at least I will by then, he thought. Rob cocked his eyebrow in disbelief, but Eric let it slide. “Give me a few days warning before you start so we can review and I can get you all the materials we’ll need.”

“Sure thing, Eric. You’re the boss,” Rob said, and Eric walked away.

Damn straight, I’m the boss. Andi isn’t the only one who knows things, Eric thought as he added a few more sticks to his outline. He didn’t need her help on the parking lot, path, or ramp. They’d agreed in the beginning that Eric would be in charge of the yard and Andi had the interior of the house. At least he could stick to their agreement.
